About Avalon

What ages does Avalon serve?
We welcome children ages 2½ through 14 across our Casa, Elementary, and Middle School programs.
What makes Avalon different from other Montessori schools in Toronto?
Avalon is founder-led. The three teachers who started the school in 1999 — Sherry, Angie, and Christine — are still on campus daily. We are not a corporate institution; we are a small, independent community that prioritizes integrity and the child’s happiness over rapid growth.
Is Avalon accredited?
Yes. Avalon is a proud member of the Ontario Federation of Independent Schools (OFIS), ensuring high standards of safety, teacher qualifications, and academic accountability.
How do I register or learn more?
The best first step is to schedule a call or visit us at an open house. Our registrar, Emily, is happy to answer questions and walk you through the enrolment process.
Is there a trial period for new students?
Yes. Every child is admitted on a trial period of one month, allowing our teachers and your family to ensure the program is the right fit and that your child is transitioning comfortably.
What are Avalon’s tuition fees?
Tuition fees for our Casa, Elementary, and Middle School programs are detailed in our fee schedule — reach out and we’ll share it.

The Montessori Way

How do I know if Montessori is right for my child?
Montessori is often an excellent fit for children who are naturally curious, those who thrive in a low-pressure environment, or students who may be gifted or neurodivergent. We focus on the whole child rather than standardized testing, which reduces anxiety and builds genuine confidence.
Why do you use mixed-age classes?
Multi-age groupings allow for peer mentorship and organic leadership. Older students reinforce their knowledge by helping younger ones, while younger students are inspired by their older peers. In Elementary, this also allows a child to stay with the same teacher for three years, building deep trust.
Does Avalon use traditional letter grades or standardized testing?
In our Casa and Elementary programs, we offer a non-competitive environment without letter grades or EQAO tests. We introduce formal assessments and report cards in Middle School (Grades 7 and 8) as a bridge to high school readiness.
What is a “Prepared Environment”?
Our classrooms are calm, rich learning environments designed to feel like a second home, set up so every aspect supports the developmental characteristics and interests of students at that stage — helping children develop deep focus and independence.

Casa Program (Ages 2½–6)

What is the best age to start?
The Casa program is designed for children between 2½ and 6. Maria Montessori called this the “absorbent mind” stage — the optimal time to enrol, when materials best foster the child’s skills during peak sensitive periods.
Does my child need to be potty-trained?
Children in our Wood Glen Casa Program do not need to be fully toilet-trained. Children in our Beach Casa Program must be fully toilet-trained before enrolment.
Do Casa students wear uniforms?
No. Unlike our Elementary and Middle School levels, uniforms are not required in Casa. We encourage comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing that allows children to move freely and dress independently.
Is there a nap or rest time?
Yes. We provide a quiet rest period for children who require it. As children grow and no longer need to sleep, they transition into an afternoon work period.
What are the enrolment options?
We offer full-time and part-time options. Our standard day runs 8:30am to 3:45pm, with before and after-school care available at both campuses.

Elementary & Middle School (Ages 6–14)

Do you offer a middle school program?
Yes. Our Middle School serves students ages 12–14 (Grades 7 and 8), offering an alternative experience rooted in Montessori philosophy with a focus on student agency and real-world learning.
Does the curriculum meet Ontario standards?
Yes. While we follow the interests of the child, we consistently meet and exceed provincial guidelines, ensuring a strong foundation in core academics alongside French, the Arts, and physical education.
How do you prepare my child for the transition to high school?
We act as a bridge. In Middle School we gradually introduce lockers, report cards, and increased assignment complexity, so students graduate with the executive-functioning skills secondary school requires.
Do students wear uniforms?
Mandatory uniforms are required for all Elementary and Middle School students, helping eliminate social stereotypes and keep the focus on learning and community.
Is there an arts program?
Yes. Every spring, students manage and perform a full-scale show at a local theatre — from acting to stage management — building immense creative confidence.

Inclusion & Support

How do you support children with unique learning needs?
We are an inclusive school. Our educators are specialists in applying the Montessori curriculum to your child’s specific needs, helping them build the tools to support and regulate themselves.
What is the Learning Support Program?
For students in Grades 1 through 8 who need extra help with time management, organization, or academic catch-up, we offer a dedicated Learning Support Program providing additional time and attention.

Daily Life & Logistics

What are your school hours?
Wood Glen Campus (2½–6), 31 Wood Glen Road: 8:00am to 5:00pm. Beach Campus (JK–Grade 8), 65 Glen Manor Drive: 8:00am to 6:00pm.
Will my child have the same teacher for multiple years?
Yes. One of our greatest strengths is staff retention, with most teachers at Avalon for over 10 years — allowing your child to build meaningful, long-lasting relationships with their educators.
How do you handle meals?
A nutritionally balanced hot lunch by Yummy Catering is included for all full-time Casa and Elementary students. We are a nut-aware environment and strictly manage allergies; parents provide daily snacks on a rotating basis.
How do you communicate with families?
We use a number of tools to keep families informed — homebooks, the SeeSaw app, email, phone calls, meetings, Google Classroom, and social media — so we can work together to support each student.
